We Are Invictus

Invictus Games Foundation

A global support app connecting military personnel, built with hybrid technology for iOS, Android, and Web.

A bit of context...

On a trip to the Warrior Games in the USA in 2013, HRH The Duke of Sussex saw first-hand how the power of sport can help physically, psychologically and socially, those suffering from injuries and illness. He was inspired by his visit and the Invictus Games was born. The inaugural Invictus Games, held from 10-14 September 2014 in London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, brought together over 400 competitors from 13 nations around the world. Across four days of intense sporting action, they competed in nine sports in five venues.

Following the success of the games, the Invictus GamesFoundation (IGF) wanted to create a social media support network, not only for games competitors, but for all military and ex-military personnel to stay connected globally. The platform intended to provide relevant news and event information to users, as well as allowing direct interaction between members.

The Challenge

The challenge was to develop a secure, closed-community social media app for global military personnel, offering region-specific news and posts, multi-language support, and seamless interaction across iOS, Android, and web platforms. The app needed to ensure accessibility, security, and user engagement while maintaining personalized content for each geographical area.

How Flowmoco Responded

We began by defining the high-level requirements through a series of workshops, developing user personas and user stories to guide the build process. The “We Are Invictus” app was built as a closed community platform, accessible only to invited or eligible users across the globe, and supported 20 different languages. The app was designed to deliver region-specific content while allowing users to interact and post news based on their geographical area.

A hybrid development approach with Capacitor.js was adopted for rapid deployment across iOS, Android, and web. The backend was powered by Django, and Google Translate API was integrated for realtime translation and multi-language content. The app ensured security with HTTPS encryption and token-based authentication, and was thoroughly tested via TestFlight and Google Play Console before release.

Ultimately, a secure, scalable, and global support network for military personnel was delivered that continues to be hosted and supported by Flowmoco.
